I ate lunch here today. I also ate here when it was Little Tokyo. The food was good then. Well the food now is even better. Much fresher sushi. Everything was delicious.

Warm sushi?! some were good but all that great... I love sushi but I felt sick after eating warm sushi.

I just moved to the area, and have been looking for a decent sushi place. I saw the reviews for Sushi 101, and decided to give it a try. We ordered the Gyoza and avocado rolls for our kids, and my husband and I split the vegetable tempura and 4 different sushi rolls. First the good... The service was great. The waiters were very polite, our food was brought promptly, and our drinks were always full. Looking over the menu the prices seemed very reasonable, and they had a great selection. Our first dish, the vegetable tempura was pretty good. The sauce was flavorful, and the veggies were fairly well-cooked, though the zucchini was a little on the mushy side. If our meal had stopped there, I probably would have given this place 4 stars. Then there was the bad... The sushi was honestly the worst I have ever tasted. The salmon roll came out first, and the fish tasted, well, fishy, and was very tough. It was difficult to choke down my bite. The other three rolls we had were the Super Crunch Roll, the Rainbow Roll, and the Green Dragon Roll. The shrimp in the Super Crunch Roll was rubbery and flavorless, and it was supposed to have spicy mayo but didn't. The Rainbow Roll had the salmon on it, which ruined it for me, and the Green Dragon Roll had a super sticky, sweet, teriyaki-like sauce covering it over the top (the menu did not say that there was a sauce on it). Both the Rainbow Roll and the Green Dragon Roll were supposed to have crab in them, but it was definitely imitation. Now don't get me wrong, I have had my share of fake crab California Rolls, but typically when it is fake it is more of a crab salad, mixed with mayo. These rolls just had huge chunks of imitation crab meat. Not very appetizing to me. I wanted to like this place, but after tasting the sushi, I will definitely not be going back.

Decent food. Great service. Good prices. Just what i was looking for. I would recommend this place. We ordered cream cheese wontons which were great, how can you go wrong with cream cheese, it came with a sweet and spicy sauce which made it taste fantastic. We also had a seaweed salad which tasted a little bland but I think that's pretty typical of seaweed salads. I also had Green Dragon roll, dynamite roll and Nemo roll. The dynamite roll was my favorite, deep fried and covered with eel sauce. 2nd favorite was Nemo roll, which had crab and was creamy, although it was supposed to have spicy mayo. It wasn't spicy at all and I have a very low spicy toletance. I wanted more spicy than mayo. And then the green dragon 3rd favorite, tasted good because of the avocado, but could have used some spicy mayo.

Picked up two rolls for takeout and it did not disappoint. We chose the crunchy wasabi and california roll and each was fresh and delicious. We will definitely come back here again.

Located in a very small town this is my favorite Japanese Restaurant in Charleston. The portions are great and the food is legit! This place has improved tremendously.

My husband and I decided to eat here on the way back from Cypress Gardens. I was a bit skeptical about sushi in Charleston, but if their sushi is as good as their rice dishes, I can understand why they have a great rating on Yelp. My husband ordered the hibachi plate with shrimp and scallops. The shrimp and scallops were both of good size and cooked perfectly. The scallops were so sweet and were nicely caramelized. The fried rice could have used some veggies in it, but the flavor was very good. I had the katsu don. The pork was tender and juicy. The rice was flavored nicely with the sweet sauce of the katsu don. The best surprise was the salad dressing. It was a ginger dressing that tasted housemade. It was light yet very flavorful.

Was disappointed with the sushi from here . We tried it based on the reviews on here . After recently moving here from Miami we were on the hunt for a regular sushi place , this is definitely not it . We tried 5 different rolls and all were pretty bland . Too much rice not enough filling . So disappointing .

The food was good. We all ordered sushi and some appetizers. I wasn't completely impressed with the food but it wasn't bad either. What turned everyone off the most wasn't the food or the service, because like I mentioned that wasn't bad, it was the disgusting bathrooms! Omg it was the equivalent of a horrible gas station bathroom that has never been cleaned. It made me think that if this was the standard that they have that the rest of the restaurant probably isn't that clean either. If the bathrooms were cleaner we would probably come back, but they were that horrible that none of us want to go back there again.

My husband and I's favorite sushi spot. It's casual and convenient. All of their sushi and sashimi is wonderful. The tempura veggie appetizer is amazing, along with, what I usually order along with my main course, seaweed salad. Delicious! I also love how you get to sit at the sushi bar and watch up close the chef making sushi and sashimi. It's also a bonus that you can actually see what he's doing; unlike most sushi restaurants where you can just see the chefs hands moving randomly behind the counter.

The service was great. We went to have dinner here last night. I ordered the steak hibatchi. The steak was cooked just right. However, there were only 10 pieces of steak. For $9.99 i was expecting a little more. It was small portions except the rice. They give to much rice. Other than that they were good

Went in for a Lent Friday to grab some sushi. I had the Philly roll and tuna roll with Salmon skin added. Delish!! I am so excited that this is literally 3 minutes from my house. Prices were great, service was great, food was great. Can't wait to go back.

This place is pretty good if you compare it with other Japanese spots in Charleston/Goose Creek/Summerville. However, if I had to compare it with the restaurants I've tried while living in Japan for 10 years and San Diego for 5, I would think of it as mediocre. I *try* (really hard) not to be biased when I check out the restaurants here. This place used to be called Little Tokyo. I know because I ate there a couple of times before they changed it. I like it better now. The menu is better with more variety. Normally, we end up getting that Japanese lady as our server. She is very good; always prompt and attentive. I feel like she's the only server there sometimes despite it being a busy day. Anyway, onto the food. I usually get the sushi. Recently, I ordered the GMC, Deluxe Crunch, and the Salmon Skin. They were all very good and usually taste the same each time, which is nice for someone who likes consistency. I will for sure get the GMC and the Deluxe Crunch every time I eat here. Their rice plates aren't bad to get either. The teriyaki chicken and hibachi steak is good, especially paired up with the white sauce. I would need one rice plate and one sushi roll or three sushi rolls and no rice plate in order to be full and satisfied. Overall, I would recommend you to try Sushi 101, especially if you're in or near Goose Creek.

In town to visit family. Wanted to stay in the area for dinner. It was either Sushi 101 or Los Arcos, which is directly next to this place. My youngest cousin flipped a coin and we went here for some hibachi and sushi. Got seated right away. Our drink orders were taken. We got some appetizers to start off with. Some calamari and Sushi A. Sushi A comes with 6 Cali rolls and a couple pieces of nigiri. Calamari was good. The California roll was alright. Coming from California myself, there was a different taste to this. I then ordered the steak hibachi entree. Comes with soup and salad. Asked for my meat to be cooked medium. It came out medium-well. Not a big problem though. Poured a hefty amount of their white sauce all over my food. Makes everything ten times more amazing! Good place for some food. A bit pricey for some hibachi, but won't necessarily burn a big hole in your pocket.

They have Great Sushi! I love the rainbow roll with cucumber wrap, The Staff is fun and friendly. My kids love the food as well. The decor is a little lacking if that is for some reason important to you., but is is nice and clean.

I really needed a sushi fix, and this place really came through. I had the emperor roll, as well as two crunchy crab rolls. Even though the crab looked to be imitation, it didn't taste like it. Was it the best i ever had? No, but it was good and tasted yummy. The service wasn't the best, for not being what I would call busy our waitress had to many side conversations going on with staff and management. Not the worse by any means. She was polite and always finished with a smile. i will go again, it's not far and way better then other places we have tried in goose creek. Also the squid salad was right on the mark. My husband toun katsu, he liked it.

The problem with finding a restaurant that serves great food is that I have a hard time stopping myself from eating. Sushi 101 is so good, I could eat til I bust open. The place was empty when we arrived just after 12-noon. What a shame! As stated in other reviews, this used to be Little Tokyo, but the restaurant has been renovated and looks amazing and clean. The staff are all so eager, friendly, and seemingly excited about working here that their enthusiasm built up my own expectations of what I was about to experience. We stated with the Chicken Gyoza , which are pan-fried and perfect. The sauce was light and nicely seasoned. This is the best I've been served in Charleston. Too many times I've gotten soggy, bland gyoza, but I could make a meal out of Sushi 101 gyoza alone! Next was a standard California Roll. Again, the preparation was outstanding. Instead of the finely chopped cucumber, avocado and crab meat, they opted for a coarser cut, and to me, this added a crunch that accentuated the freshness of the cucumber. On the outside of the roll it is sprinkled with toasted sesame seeds. This is where I should have stopped eating, but I had ordered the Chicken Tonkatsu, which is thinly sliced white-meat chicken, breaded and fried, sitting atop a bowl of rice. Dipping sauce on the side, I made myself hurt by finishing the tonkatsu and nearly all the rice. I don't remember seeing desserts listen on the menu (may have been there), so I asked. When I heard they had Red Bean Mochi ice cream, I ordered one for me and my girlfriend. You get two mochi balls filled with the sweet red bean ice cream, split into fours, and filled with whipped cream. The presentation was beautiful. If you've never had red bean ice cream, please try it. Goose Creek is so lucky to have Sushi 101. It is a restaurant worthy of a prime downtown location. Don't let a great restaurant go unnoticed or untried. I will be returning, not only because it is close to home, but because it was that good and I want more. Thank you Sushi 101 and all the wonderful staff that made this experience memorable.

The quality of sushi was pretty good. I thought I would get more food for my money. I ordered for our whole family. Got 5 sushi rolls& the rest hibachi& appetizers. I ordered online & called sushi 101 after my order, to confirm. Everything was good to go. My mother in law and I picked it up& we checked the bags before we left. All was good, except I must have clicked extra shrimp instead of a side salad. But its all good. The extra shrimp hit the spot too.

I really hate the atmosphere in here. It's way too bright and it reminds me of a cafeteria. They also only serve beer and wine. The food was good but didn't make up for the rest. I won't be returning.

Small little sushi place located in a strip mall. Nothing fancy but the service was great and the rolls we had were delicious. I recommend the sea buddy roll and the my, my, Mai!

Ate here this evening for restaurant week and was not dissapointed. $20 for 2 people to eat with app, soup, salad, and entree is unheard of. The sushi was ok...not the best I've ever had but it was good. The hibachi was good also. My server was very sweet despite being so busy. All in all we had a good meal for an amazing price. Nice to have a decent place to eat in Goose Creek for a change.

My wife and I eat here from time to time. It is very good sushi I always sit at the bar and have great service. I would say the best sushi in the charleston area.

  • Colleen J.

This was just a mediocre experience for me and I would NOT eat sushi here again. It came out at room temperature - which irks me a bit - and was nothing impressive. My taste buds were let down, it was depressing. The sesame tuna was a delicious surprise though; and I think if I were to return I would stay along the lines of food that has been cooked in some way or another.

When Colleen and I originally ate here shortly after they opened, we weren't too impressed. Fast forward probably a year+ later and I find mysel on that side of town for work, it's lunch time, and the folks I'm working with suggest Sushi 101 as where we should go. Apparently they go there all the time and really like it...I'm still skeptical but agree to roll with. Well, let me tell you, Sushi 101 has definitely worked out all the kinks and they are DOING IT now! Lunch was delicious, well priced, and well-portioned. I got the sushi lunch which let me pick three from a selection of rolls for about 10-12$ Great price, because they included tuna and salmon instead of just the California rolls you might get at a more skimpy place. I was there with a party of about 10 that day, the service was excellent, and everyone left happy and full. Great success.

I'm visiting from California and was craving sushi badly and saw the great reviews for this place and decided to give it a shot. We are so glad we did! We got seated super fast and our waitress was super nice and friendly! She never left our drinks empty which was nice. Our orders looked amazing and came out super fast! The place is clean and the atmosphere is great! We will definitely be back!

This place is always good. They have yummy sushi on their lunch menu and they are super huge rolls. I normally get 3 at other places cause they have a small limited menu but this place has a great variety!

I lived in Japan for about two years, so any time I walk into a "Japanese" restaurant in the USA, I walk in with very low expectations. Last night I walked into Sushi 101 already prepared to hate it. This is Goose Creek, SC; it is not a town well-known for its sparkling array of excellent restaurants. We were greeted prompty, upon walking in, by a very friendly hostess and seated near the sushi bar towards the rear of the dining room. We ordered a pair of Kirin Ichibahns and looked over the menu. They had a very large selection of sushi and sashimi, a respectable starter menu and small section of "habachi" foods for those who don't care for sushi. We ordered some edamame, a California roll, a cucumber roll, a rainbow roll, a dragon roll, a Charleston roll, and tuna tataki. The sushi was nice, but the rice could have used some seasoning. "SUSHI" in Japanese means " VINEGARED RICE".Thus the rice itself is supposed to be seasoned wih salt, sugar, and a little vinegar. What we got seemed to be just plain steamed rice. So I have to take star away for that. On the whole though it was very good. The fish was fresh, and the rolls were tightly wrapped. The tuna tataki was the star of the show. There were 7 very generously large slices of tuna laid over a bed of cucumber and wakame seaweed salad. I was a little sad that they put shichimi powder on the tuna, as it was so fresh and lovely that the extra spice just detracted from its beauty. This, however, is a great failing of most Japanese places on the east coast. Less is definately more when dealing with beautiful fish. But now I know for next time to simply ask them to leave the shicimi off. Sushi 101 will definately be seeing my family and I again, and often.

Having a craving for sushi, undecided to try out Sushi 101. Usually I'd stop at Sanno before I got down to where Sushi 101 is located, but a little driving rewarded me today. I ordered the eel roll, the Green Dragon, and the Heartbreaker. All three had extremely fresh ingredients with great taste and proper texture. My favorite was definitely the Heartbreaker. Sushi 101 definitely deserves to be a destination for sushi lovers in Goose Creek.

While looking for a place to eat which can accommodate my husband because he just had surgery and can only eat soup. I used yelp to direct me to a place that had great reviews. I ordered & shared a spider roll, California, great California and a rainbow roll. We enjoyed them very much. Their slices of fish on the rainbow roll were super big. Yum!!!! It was all Delish. My husband ordered a seafood udon. And that was just as awesome. Thank to my fellow yelper a that were right this place is good. Bathrooms were clean. Restaurant was clean, decor was nice. :))

Great sushi, I try to stop by at least once a week. I went in and sat at the sushi bar, very charming fellow. I've had a lot there, and it was all great, sushi-wise. I've only had one hot dish, the yellowtail cheek hibachi, which was absolutely amazing. One time I was unfortunately behind a large birthday party, and subsequently had to wait for my food, but it was still worth the wait. Would highly recommend.

I have eaten at this restaurant twice and plan to make this my sushi restaurant of choice. The food is delicious, the service superb, and the price is extremely affordable. I plan to go later this week and bring along relatives who are vacationing in the area.

I'm so glad that I decided to try this place because it's amazing! We were greeted as we waked in and the server was at our table within a minute. He was amazing and super nice. I got the lunch bento box and it came with soup, salad, spring roll, fried rice, chicken teriyaki and a California roll for only $7.99! The only reason I didn't give them 5 stars is they have Pepsi products but was told I could get diet coke for $3.79. So of course I got it and then later found out when my drink was empty that I would have to pay another $3.79 for a refill. I will most definitely be going back very soon!

By far the best take out sushi around. Best place to go to get fresh sushi that's not rushed just because it's take out! I've been going to this place since the opened and will drive from any part of time just for their sushi! Fast, Fresh, affordable, and delicious!

Excellent sushi! Just in case anyone has ever eaten Sushi anywhere else around Charleston, I'll let you all in on a secret. Sushi 101 is owned by the same person as Tsunami. (For those of you that don't know what this is, it is another Sushi/Hibachi resturant.) Guess what...it's the EXACT same menu too. The place is a small resturant that looks like they tried to renovate it. Since it is Tsunami, the food is fantastic, if you want the same great food at a better atmosphere head to Tsunami, but if you don't really care for atmosphere and just want great Sushi, eat here.

  • Rebecca H.

Nice sushi place with great choices. Love the Bento Box at Lunch (served until 3:30!!) and the Firecracker roll. I do not recommend the hibachi here, too much of some sort of flavoring that makes it all taste the same (IMHO). Good service, fast and efficient.

Best Sushi/Hibachi ever! Eat it almost everyday!! Servers are nice. Bathrooms are clean! Restaurant is overall clean.. And the atmosphere is great! Love it

We tried this spot because they had a Restaurant Week special menu that fed 2 for $20. For $20 you get to split an appetizer, each person then gets to pick a soup or salad, and an entree. For the entrees they had several hibachi specials or you could pick 2 rolls and one of the rolls could be a speciality roll. Pretty good deal! Overall though, the experience was just okay. For appetizers we had the edamame and the spring rolls. Both were very good! I love edamame but I'd imagine that's hard to mess up. The spring rolls were very tasty and I've had bad spring rolls before so that's a plus! And actually the Restaurant Week menu states vegetable spring rolls but they were out so our spring rolls had meat in it (I forget what kind but maybe sausage??). My niece & daughter both ordered the salads with ranch dressing. Nothing bad to report. My mom got the miso soup and I ordered the mushroom I think? I can't recall exactly. Mine was a clear broth with mushrooms and it was very tasty. My mom's was a cloudy broth and had tofu. She didn't care for hers but really liked mine. My mom has always feared sushi because "it's raw!" so I explained that not all sushi is raw. She wanted to try something so in addition to the restaurant week menu, she ordered a california roll. Everyone except me ordered one of the hibachi plates for their entree. I wanted sushi!! I picked the GMC and the Heartbreaker. First, as someone else mentioned, they do use imitation crab meat. So disappointing!! How can your restaurant name include the word SUSHI in it and you use imitation crab meat in your sushi??? In my opinion, if you're going to name your restaurant after a food item, that food item better be where your expertise lies and that's just not possible using imitation ANYTHING. So between the California roll and my two rolls, I was NOT impressed. I've had better sushi from Publix. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't good. And my Heartbreaker roll was supposed to be "spicy tuna" but there was no kick unless I dipped it in my soy sauce/wasabi mixture. I tried bites of the steak, chicken, shrimp, rice and veggies from the various hibachi plates ordered and they were okay. Not bad but I've definitely had better. We all agreed that 3 out of 5 stars was very fair. I would never, ever return here for sushi and if I'm craving hibachi, I've had better so I'd probably go elsewhere for that as well.

This place is AMAZING!!! My neighbor told me about it and a coupel of days later me and my family went out to dinner. The totaly of our bill was $31, if we went to Wasabi's it would have been double that and honestly Sushi 101's food was way better. The firecracker specialty roll is to die for. It is nice and quite place and has no dark lighting. Good in my belly and for my pockets!

Crab wontons were hideous. The cream cheese tasted bad and it really overwhelmed my entire palate with the feeling of nausea. The rolls we ordered were edible and were alright for the very cheap prices though I did get sick in the parking lot upon leaving. I really think it was the crab wontons as the rolls really tasted fine, but who knows? The waitress was nice but did not hide her annoyance at our indecision when it came to ordering. We really did not take that long and she kept plaguing us in increments of less than 3 minutes. Really felt like she wanted to not be there. This is a strip mall joint and the vibe for such was inescapable on in the inside with crayon scribbles all over the walls next to our table. The music was horrid mall music which truly made me want to eat and leave as quick as possible-not a comfortable or relaxing place to eat. Went with my husband and another couple, because of the annoying, annoyed waitress, and the awful music, it was not an enjoyable place to socialize. If you are looking for an extremely cheap place to eat, this may be it but don't go expecting much.

Place is okay. Coming from hawaii i know good fish. Obviously my expectations were not very high to begin with so this may be a little biased. Service was pretty dam good. Very attentive waitress. Food. First it took a long time for the food to come out. Don't go in with an already developed appetite, by the time you get your food you'll be cranky. I had seared ahi for a quick appetizer. Man this was a bummer. The slices were so thin it was nearly lunch meat. I had a couple rolls which i cant remember but i did have to make up for lack of flavor with tons if wasabi, shoyu, and ginger. Ultimately its a 'not so' quick fox for sushi but i suggest sanno or osaka before this spot. Aloha

This is a great little Japanese restaurant. Whoever runs it pays attention to every aspect and thinks about every detail -- right from day 1 the wait staff has been experienced and stellar, the menu items are varied and the selection and price are appropriate for the area, food ranges from average to really excellent. Both the ginger and soy salad dressings are really delicious, the miso soup is so-so. Rolls are decent-to-excellent, hibachi's decent, noodle dishes & appetizers are really good. My personal favorite item here is chirashi. It's basically a bowl of sushi rice covered in a variety of sliced raw fish and such (chef's choice, no picking, no more than 2 pieces of each type, but it's always a good mix of things). Love it, never been disappointed. It's very filling and great bang for the buck for those who like nigiri or sashimi. It's 12 bucks, but it's so many pieces of fish that per piece, it comes out significantly cheaper than nigiri/sashimi. To give an idea of quantity: last time I ordered this, there were 13 pieces of raw fish, 2 pieces of egg, 2 pieces of imitation crab, 1 shrimp, and 1 piece of roasted eel. It's always about the same quantity, but the mix differs slightly every time. And, chirashi's not offered in a lot of Japanese restaurants in the Charleston area. The service here is always excellent, every single time. I eat here once or twice a week, and these guys never miss on service, even when the place is packed to the gills. I can tell someone behind-the-scenes really cares -- they're always making little adjustments, getting better all the time. In the beginning, they rolled the chopsticks up with the fork in the napkin. They don't anymore, I guess once they noticed that a lot of people don't use the chopsticks. They tried putting orchids on the tables. They keep playing with the wall decor. It's a very sweet, local sushi spot.
